- Take this one step further. It is only Self-insured companies that can do
- this. Self insured companies use an insurance company as an Underwriter only.
- The medical paperwork goes to the insurance company who in turn bill the
- company and keep a nominal fee or a contract price. The problem then is that
- your company basically IS the insurance company and from some cold, hard,
- personal experience I have found that most all laws regarding employer
- sponsored health plans don't apply to Self-Insured companies.
-
- It really does suck. Fortunatly the potential cost of being self insured
- usually requires a large profitable corp. And the cost is too prohibitive to
- change plans everytime someone gets cancer or aids. The problem is when like
- the original example a small company became self insured then when someone got
- aids (the medical costs would have put them out of business) the just changed
- the rules.
-
- There should be major limitations on who can be self-insured and the rules
- reguarding them should give covered individuals the same protection they
- would have if they had a contract with an Insurance company.
