- Haiti `worse than ever'
- Brethren sees evidence of continuing repression
-
- ``Under an overlay of pretended normalization, the repression is worse than
- ever,'' said Cinny Poppen after a September 25-October 2 trip to Haiti.
-
- Poppen is a Brethren member working with the Chicago Religious Task
- Force on Central America. The Task Force-sponsored trip coincided with the
- anniversary of the military coup that ousted democratically elected
- president Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
-
- The group also included two representatives of the Christian Peacemaker
- Teams, a Brethren and Mennonite group. CPT sent a group to Haiti December
- 10, including Brethren Elayne King, of Carlisle, Pa., and Sharon Helbert,
- of Timberville, Va.
-
- ``In Haiti the rule of law has totally collapsed,'' Poppen reported.
- ``In the few days following the coup, 2,000 people were killed; that number
- has now tripled or even quadrupled.
-
- ``The army is one pillar of the hierarchy in Haiti; the other is the
- church,'' Poppen said. ``All the (Catholic) bishops except one are doing
- their best to keep the repression going,'' but ``a large group of
- courageous priests and nuns work directly with the poor and are targeted
- for harassment,'' she said.
-
- ``The spirit of resistance remains strong, under incredibly difficult
- conditions.'' --AGENDA January/February 1993
