- GREENPEACE 'TICKETS' GAS-GUZZLERS AT SF AUTO SHOW
- Activists Lock Selves to New Models to Protest Fuel Inefficiency
-
- SAN FRANCISCO, November 21, 1992 (GP) Three Greenpeace activists
- locked themselves inside show models of new gas-guzzling cars
- today at the San Francisco International Auto Show to protest
- American automakers' resistance to increased fuel efficiency.
-
- Using bicycle locks, the activists secured themselves to
- the steering columns of three new models that, according to
- the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, are among the worst
- gas-guzzlers in their classes -- the Dodge Stealth, the Ford
- Probe and the Pontiac Bonneville -- as the Auto Show opened at
- Moscone Center.
-
- Greenpeace transport campaigner Sherri Kimbell said the
- protest was meant to send a strong message to the Big Three U.S.
- automakers that continued production of inefficient autos is
- fouling the air and contributing to global warming.
-
- "The technology exists today to produce safe, fuel-
- efficient cars that will help prevent global warming while
- saving consumers money," said Kimbell. "But the Detroit
- automakers have consistently resisted calls for greater fuel
- efficiency, even though public demand for higher-mileage cars
- clearly exists."
-
- According to the EPA, the compact-class Probe gets an
- average of 21 miles per gallon and emits 57 tons of carbon
- dioxide over its service life; the full-size Bonneville gets 20
- mpg and emits 60 tons of CO2; and the sports-model Stealth gets
- 19 mpg and emits more than 63 tons. The most efficient car in
- the U.S., the Geo Metro, gets 55 mpg and emits 21 tons of CO2.
-
- Outside Moscone Center, other Greenpeace activists held
- large banners saying "Gas Guzzlers Are Climate Killers" and
- "Stop Air Pollution and Global Warming." They also passed out
- mock citations for gas-guzzler violations to some of the 200,000
- potential car buyers expected in the show's week-long run.
-
- Greenpeace challenged automakers to respond to consumers'
- demands and environmental concerns by moving swiftly to bring
- technology for increased fuel efficiency to the marketplace.
- Under current U.S. law, automakers' fleets must get an average
- of 27.5 mpg, but Detroit is lobbying strongly against proposals
- to increase the standards to 40 mpg by the year 2001.
