- In addition to the daily "Today's Quote..." and the periodic
- automatic-post "public service announcements (about Paper Tiger
- Videos, PeaceNet/EcoNet, Credit Unions, Socially-conscientious
- investing etc)...
-
- ...and joining our "Friday Night Videos", the Tuesday's "Alternative
- Radio Presents", each *Wednesday* starting next week (barring bugs in
- the routines) we will periodically auto-post:
-
- "THE AFSC RESOURCE LIBRARY"
-
- Taken from their Peace Education Resource Catalog (AFSC stands for
- American Friends Service Committee -- as in Unitarian Universalist
- Service Committee, etc. Readers of misc.activism.progressive (MAP) may
- already be familiar with FCNL or the Friends Committee on National
- Legislation).
-
- Note that we realized, as with Alternative Radio, that the AFSC
- catalog we have online is not up-to-the-minute; in fact not up to
- 1992. However, what we have is a good deal of if not the great
- majority of the most current catalog (ie, the current catalogs minus
- latest releases), which are still very timely and valuable, and
- pending these organizations getting online themselves or otherwise
- providing us with updates, we simply to not the the human-power to
- needed to constantly update these [In fact, you don't want to know how
- long the AFSC file has sat in my directory (albeit available via the
- Automatic Archiver to anyone) before I finally braved the emacs
- batch-mode programming to set it up as an auto-post --HB].

- In the future, we would like to add a "Book Corner" auto-post, or,
- since the main publisher of progressive books seems to be South End
- Press, to put the South End Press catalog online for weekly auto-posts
- (by section, say) to MAP. So far South End has not reacted with
- bubbling enthusiasm to our friends at NLNS's suggestion that they put
- the catalog online but maybe they can be enticed into providing us
- with disks, eventually -- far preferable to the still quite
- considerable efforts required to scan-in, proof-read, edit, etc, from
- scratch.
-
- If you can encourage South End (or Z magazine) to come online, provide
- us with disks, etc, please do. In fact the same goes for the Nation
- (now *occasionally* using their PeaceNet accounts nation@igc.org), In
- These Times, and others -- including local student/community
- publications. We *can* help find them technical support if necessary
- (please contact us at pach@pencil.cs.missouri.edu if you have
- "contacts" or ideas).
-
- MAP has some 15,000 readers you might want to mention, other groups
- (alt.activism, talk.environment, etc) adding well over 100,000, and
- the UseNet at some 2 million.
-
- I have also become convinced that a crucial goal for us online
- activists is to bring Nation/In These Times (any other weeklies of
- note?) fully online to counter-balance the disturbingly rapid spread
- of right-wing (pseudo-balanced by "mainstream") publications like
- _National Review_ and _Insight_ which are now being disseminated on
- the FreeNet (with some 30,000+ readers) together with e.g. Washington
- Post and *no* left/progressive choices, and by ACC, the American
- Cybercasting Corporation, to some UseNet locations (E.g. usa-today.*
- newsgroups at U. of Chicago).
-
- Please contact us at pach@pencil.cs.missouri.edu if you are interested
- in helping of have suggestions.
-
- End of announcement-within-announcement; the "header" from the AFSC
- auto-posts follows.
