- ---------------
- Produced and Directed by Roberta Seligman
-
- >INSTITUTIONS: VHS Sale $159. Rent $49.
- >INDIVIDUALS/LOW-INCOME GROUPS: VHS Sale $45. Rent $30.
-
- Mel Seligman was a patriotic young American when he stormed
- the beaches of Normandy in 1944 as part of the D-Day invasion.
- Returning four decades later to the tranquil Normandy country-
- side, Seligman and his family tell how the horror and shock of
- combat led to his early discharge for "battle fatigue"--and left
- him emotionally scarred for life. Through the personal exper-
- iences of one man, SOLDIER'S HEART articulates a little told
- side of World War II: 45% of the soldiers medically discharged
- suffered from combat stress; tens of thousands of men emerged
- >from the war unable to lead normal lives. SOLDIER'S HEART is an
- extraordinary, personal account conceived and produced by
- Seligman's daughter.

- Bob Sampson is a former U.S. Army paratrooper who fought in
- Vietnam until his left leg was shot off. Nikolai Chuvanov is a
- former paratrooper in the Soviet Army who served in Afghanistan
- until his right leg was shattered by a bullet. HEART OF THE
- WARRIOR movingly portrays the personal aftermath of war for
- these two men. Sampson and Chuvanov travel separately back to
- Vietnam and Afghanistan, where they graphically relive their
- combat experiences and meet their former enemies face-to-face.
- When the two veterans finally meet each other, both still suffer
- >from the enduring pain of war-time. Through compassion, comrad-
- erie, and even humor these former warriors form a powerful, heal-

- Since China's occupation of Tibet in 1949, more than 1 mil-
- lion Tibetans have died and over 6,000 monasteries have been de-
- stroyed at the hands of the Chinese. TIBET IN EXILE documents
- the tragic plight of Tibet, focusing on the nearly 120,000 Ti-
- betans who have escaped from their remote homeland to live in
- India and Nepal. Under the guidance of their leader, the Dalai
- Lama, the exile communityu is struggling to preserve their an-
- cient culture, regain their country, and maintain their Buddhist
- values of compassion and tolerance. The video highlights the
- story of 10 children smuggled out of Tibet by relatives who
- crossed the Himalayas on foot so that the children might live
- more freely. Included is rare footage of the Dalai Lama's 1959
- escape and more recent footage of attacks by the chinese Army
- on Tibetan monks. While providing enlightenment on the dire
- situation Tibetans face, TIBET IN EXILE offers a lesson of hope
- and cultural survival relevant to all.

- WHERE THERE IS HATRED 1990 * 57 min.
- ---------------------
- Produced by IIan Ziv and Jonathan Miller
-
- >VHS Sale $39.95 Rent #20.
-
- Horrified at the toll taken by violent struggles for social
- justice, Israeli journalist Ilan Ziv traveled to Chile, the West
- Bank, and the Philippines looking for alternative models of soc-
- ial change. Based on his experiences, Ziv produced WHERE THERE
- IS HATRED, a powerful argument for the effectiveness of nonvio-
- lent political action.
- This film draws on case studies demonstrating that popular,
- nonviolent resistance to state oppression is a viable alternative
- to armed revolution. Dr. Gene Sharp, Director of the Harvard
- University Program on Nonviolent Strategies, analyzes these
- recent struggles and clearly delineates four stages in the pro-
- cess of creating effective nonviolent social action: Overcoming
- Fear, Unity and Empowerment, Demilitarizing the Military, and
- Building a New Society.
- Introduced by Maryknoll Father William F. Mullan, this is a
- thought-provoking film which puts "people power" in a positive
- perspective. Especially recommended for use in Peace Studies
- and Comparative Politics.
-
- "WHERE THERE IS HATRED vividly captures the drama and
- significance of "people power" movements that are chang-
- ing history in remarkable and unexpected ways."

- Union Theological Seminary, Philippines.

-
- RIGHT HUMAN RELATIONS is a thought-provoking look at the de-
- velopment of "human rights" from the time of Moses through the
- 20th Century. The program asserts that concern for human rights
- is common to diverse religious and political traditions. From
- the Incas in Peru and the ancient Greeks to today's evolving glo-
- bal culture, the key to "right human relations" is seen as the
- struggle for human rights.
- The film presents the positive landmarks in human history
- that have helped advance the notion of human rights. A special
- focus is placed on the creation of the United Nations in 1945
- the subsequent adoption of the "Universal Declaration of Human
- Rights."

-
- WHOSE BREAD YOU EAT is a 12 minute ethical challenge to col-
- lege and high school students making first-time career choices.
- Narrated by actor Esai Marales ("La Bamba"), this discussion
- starter urges students to consider the social implications of
- their work choices and to take personal responsibility for sol-
- ving our society's problems. Science and Engineering students
- in particular are asked to consider learning about alternative
- career paths. As the Cold War winds down, the "best and
- brightest" may find fewer opportunities available in the defense
- industry. The video maintains that true national security comes
- not from sophisticated weapons systems, but from repairing our
- "decayed social infrastructure."
- A DETAILED 35 PAGE WORKBOOK ACCOMPANIES THE TAPE. It includes
- Readings, Discussion Questions, Exercises, and Resources. The
- tape and workbook are designed for use by teachers, clergy,

-
- The Pentagon spends over $1.5 billion a year for advertising

- been through the military. This colorful, factual, profes-

- are recruiters promises really worth? Does military training

- recruiters ignore? CHOICE OR CHANCE also addresses the key

- Military spending is decreasing and many corporations de-

- The fear of losing jobs is one of the main reasons for sup-
- port of large military contracts and for opposition to deep re-
- ductions in nuclear and conventional arsenals. In San Diego the
- reduction of military contracts threatens one out of every four
- jobs. This problem also faces many other communities in the
- United States. At a conference held in San Diego, represent-
- atives of labor, management, and the community discuss economic
- conversion and how to save jobs when military contracts are cut
- back. A local community organizer also presents a compelling
