- European Community Hits Cuba on Human Rights
-
- The European Community (EC) criticised Cuba in a statement issued
- on Dec. 22, citing its human rights violations, particularly the
- persectution of activists by Havana authorities. The 12 members
- spoke specifically of the case of Sebastian Arcos, who fought in
- the Cuban revolution and who is now the head of the Cuban
- Committee for Human Rights. He was recently sentenced to four
- years and eight months for distributing "enemy propaganda,"
- according to the US right-wing group Freedom House. Freedom House
- also mentioned human rights activists Elizardo Sanchez and Jesus
- Yanez Pelletier. According to Freedom House's information, these
- two were beaten on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day. (edlp
