- A study by the Australian Human Rights Commission has found that
- women are still paid considerably less than their male
- counterparts. The study looked at sex discrimination in over-award
- payments, and the commission's report was tabled in parliament Dec
- 17.
-
- Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Quentin Garth, says the
- report sounds a warning about what could happen to women's wages in
- a less regulated industrial relations system. He says measures have
- to be put in place now to prevent the disparity in male and female
- payments grow any wider.
-
- The report has found that full time workers are five times more
- likely to receive over-award payments than part time workers. Yet
- 80% of the part time workforce is made up of women .
-
- The report has recommended unions and individuals make use of the
- six discrimination acts to bring parity in wages. It has also
- recommended over-award payments be made to part time workers. (R.
- Australia 12/17)
