  25. "American labor is unique among developed democracies in two major 
  26. and related respects: Its union movement is weak and declining (as 
  27. measures by membership), and it lacks the kind of labor party that 
  28. flourishes in almost all other democracies. A vast amount of 
  29. literature, in fact, is devoted to the political uniqueness of America 
  30. -- its conservatism and its singular lack of a mass labor, or social 
  31. democratic, or democratic socialist party.. This phenomenon has been 
  32. noted even in the Wall Street Journal, where is was said that a 
  33. European conservative "would be comfortable somewhere in the middle of 
  34. the American Democratic party,"

  36. "Countless explanations of American conservatism have been offered, 
  37. most of them having to do with the presumed conservatism of American 
  38. labor or that group's internal weakness. I will argue here, however, 
  39. that although those popular view have some validity, the source of 
  40. conservatism lies much less in labor than in its adversaries, in 
  41. their unique corporate power and wealth and the use of those resources 
  42. in waging what has been in many ways a uniquely repressive war on the 
  43. "labor-left"  (unions and left of center politics)

  46. do the complexity and potency of the strategies used. Historically, 
  47. those strategies have included the use of private and public armed 
  48. force against unionism, dominance of the mass media, the stigmatizing 
  49. of much labor-left activism as "un-American"," manipulation of the 
  50. legal system and labor relations, control of economic policy and the 
  51. globalization of the U.S. economy, and especially the heavy [corporate 
  52. capitalist] influence brought to bear on government policy and on a 
  53. political system that is uniquely inhospitable to challenges from the 
  54. labor-left.
