- Clinton/Gore Promise To Stop The Nation's Largest Toxic Waste
- Incinerator; Reilly Trying To Sneak It In?
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
- For twelve years citizens from Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania
- have been battling Waste Technologies Industries (WTI) the nation's
- largest toxic waste incinerator now completed in East Liverpool,
- Ohio. The incinerator sits on the banks of the Ohio River, in a flood
- plain, just 300 feet from a residential neighborhood, just 1100 feet
- from an elementary school, in a vally where air inversions and
- stagnation trap emissions at breathing level two out of three days.
- The U.S. EPA has granted WTI a permit to legally spew over 4.5 tons
- of lead, 1.5 ton of mercury, and other heavy metal, dioxins, and
- furans. Recently a Federal Judge denied the opponents an injunction
- that would prohibit the imminent operations of this facility.
-
- Following the Judge's order, over a week and a half of nonviolent
- civil disobedience led to 125 arrests at the WTI facility. Those
- arrested face civil contempt charges due to an injunction against
- protests at the site, as well as criminal charges. Jury trials for
- the criminal charges will begin on Monday, December 14, 1992, and
- continue for several weeks. A Judge has already found those charged
- with civil contempt guilty and unless an appeals Judge reverses the
- decision, those sentenced will begin serving jail time as of today.
- Some have been charged as many as seven times for civil contempt and
- could spend months in jail.
-
- The Clinton/Gore Administration on Monday, December 7, announced in a
- New York Times article that as their first environmental decision
- they will shut down the WTI facility pending a full investigation by
- the General Accounting Office. EPA Administrator William Reilly,
- however, continues to allow the facility to go forward despite all
- the alleged illegalities and violations.
-
- Two weeks ago the company announced it was delaying its test burn due
- to problems with the stack. Immediately after the announcement from
- Al Gore's office, the company announced it was going ahead with the
- test burn even though the technical problems have not been corrected
- yet.
-
- Please call Senator Gore's office and thank them for their attempt to
- shut down WTI and encourage them to follow through with their
- promise. Also, please call William Reilly and tell him to stop the
- facility now.
-
- A parade will be held on January 17, 1993, to thank the Clinton/Gore
- team in East Liverpool, Ohio. Please come join us.
