- When I spoke of Virgin going belly up, I meant the store closing, not
- the company.
-
- HMV stands for His Master's Voice, and was one of the major record
- labels pre-RCA. Remember the dog and the phonograph? The label
- still exists in England, and the shop was, before Tower opened in
- Picadilly, the biggest record store in Europe--about 4 or five
- floors of records.
-
- The best classical shop, though, was EMG, which went belly up
- many years ago, when it was no longer possible to make a living
- selling at list price and providing expert knowledge and just
- about anything in print.
-
- I don't know if HMV has any plans to come to Los Angeles, but
- it would be good if they did. i have the feeling that the market
- is oversaturated with outlets, and that we'll soon see the shakeout
- in record stores we saw a few years ago in audio stores (which
- didn't end until last year when Rogersound went belly up.
-
- My guess is that the Wherehouse and Music Plus would be among
- the first to go, and that Tower will survive.
