- I visited the same newly-opened Virgin Records Megastore in Los
- Angeles that Rob Lingelbach did, and came away with several
- conclusions:
-
- 1. There's more show than substance. In the classical department there
- are about ten versions of Bach's "Well Tempered Clavichord" prominently
- displayed, but the rest of the Bach collection is very weak and badly
- organized.
-
- 2. The prices for just about everything are way out of line, compared
- with Tower Records just down the street. When people twig to this
- Virgin will have to drop prices or they will go belly up within
- the year.
-
- 3. This is not London. There, prices are usually higher, and places
- like HMV, etc. provide a price umbrella even for Tower of London
- (sorry--couldn't resist). HMV seems a lot smarter than Virgin. At the
- HMV store near Carnegie Hall in New York the prices are quite
- competitive with Tower just down the block, and the collection has
- both breadth and depth.
-
- I've no connection with any record store, except as a personal buyer
- of CD's from stores all over the world.
