- MP>record. Is the information retrieved with a laser or a needle? How
- MP>does the computer decipher all of the little holes or dots? I was
-
- Actually, neither. There's a magnetic head, a lot like on your tape
- recorder, that reads the surface of the disk. On the disk, there are
- many little particles that can have either north or south polarity...
- and this can be set and read by the disk head.
-
- MP>invented a 3.5" disk that holds 20 megabytes! Is this true?!?
-
- Yup... the disks cost about $70 each and the drives cost about $600, and
- they are a little slower than a hard disk. This kind of disk uses
- lasers to read and write the disk.
-
- MP>that we have now shall be out of date? I am afraid to buy a new
- MP>computer in the fact that it will be updated. What happens when
-
- Well, I'd say you'd be safe to go with a 386 or 486 now. Tell you what,
- for the price I paid for my XT four years ago, I could buy a 386 today.
- The 286s are starting to grow out of date as the software expects more
- speed out of the processor... but I'd say that a 386-40 would still be a
- good buy.
