- Olivia,

- It is possible to make a nearly smokeless fire if you use a good well
- designed combustor technology (stove) .... but alas the folks insist
- on using old stoves and even open fireplaces... the net result is
- very inefficient conbustion at lower temperatures without any attempt
- to "reburn" the exhaust. Gasses coming off from most fires still contain
- vast amounts of combustable materials (solid particulates and gases
- both) and shouldbe send through a second and thrird stage of a stove
- to burn them more completely.... IF this is done and particulate
- filtration is done... woood stoves would become a boon insttead of
- bane of the heating world....
-
- It is a technology problem, and education problem, NOT a problem with
- wood smoke being tokic to the environment per se... the addition of
- the particulate matter to the air... especially in winter contributes
- to serious polution be assisting in establishing inversions, varying
- albedo, etc.etc. that can cause a great deal of other local polution
- to get also trapped... and in most citites with any industrial
- activity...THAT is dangerous to people...
