- I am not a teacher; rather a programmer for 20 years and father of 3,
- so take the following with that in mind:
-
- I second the recommendation for a CD-ROM.
- That was the first thing that popped into my head.
- Being able to cram scads of reference works in there seems like an obvious
- win to me.
-
- Lotsa disk space seems fundamental,
- given the tons of stuff, especially graphics, that are available.
- Need someplace to put it.
-
- While you're getting a big disk, though, I'd recommend a tape/cartridge
- backup system. No sense having all those tons of stuff become forever
- lost due to a disk crash. $200..300.
-
- LEGO LOGO! I know there's some software in there somewhere, but
- it's hardware, too. I frankly don't know firsthand the educational
- value of this, but I gather that those who have used it swear by it.
-
- BIG FAST MODEM: Probably the BBS's to which you have access at the
- moment don't support faster than 9600, but as time marches on more
- and more of them will, and newer kinds of systems than BBS's will
- arise that make quantm leaps beyond what we're used to, but only
- with a fast modem. Currently ~$500.
-
- VIDEO GEAR: Frame grabber, and the reverse device (whose name escapes
- me at the moment). This is rather exotic and admittedly blue-sky.
- Depending on who uses it, can be a useful gateway into/out of your
- local public-access channel, artistic tool, and so forth. Rather
- lower priority.
-
- How about a 'FLYING MOUSE'? That is, cordless mouse.
- Could be useful for making the computer do things
- while you are addressing the class or other group,
- without being tied to the table the computer is on.
- Also when you're working with small groups around the room.
-
- LARGE-SCREEN MONITOR. Don't know anything about the prices of these,
- but would be an obvious win when using the computer with more than
- one or two students.
