  19. Simply copying a virus-laden file onto your disk should cause no
  20. damage.  Causing that program to be executed "kicks in" the virus. Ever
  21. extract an archive that pumped out a neat little advertising blurb as
  22. it started decompressing? Please note that it could be possible
  23. to hide a virus in an "archive" so that when you "unzip" it (especially
  24. a self-extracting one) it executes the virus. The safest way to extract
  25. and scan new files is to do so on a floppy. Load and run the program on your
  26. hard drive only when you are as sure as you can be that it is virus and trojan
  27. free. Fortunately, these beasties are very rare. I've been a BBS'er for 
  28. years and a full time sysop as well and never saw bit nor byte of one, 
  29. even though I scanned every up and download religeously.
