- A month or two ago, I made the claim that stripping the gcc-2.2.2 and/or
- 2.3.1 executables (cpp, cc1, etc) caused ld to fail (both Sun ld and GNU
- ld).
-
- I commented that not stripping these files caused the problem to go
- away, so who cares; then rms Himself asked me to investigate further.
-
- I was unable to duplicate the error; I have no idea why. I went so far
- as to unmount the partition containing a later (working) version of gcc,
- without being able to cause any ld problems.
-
- In any event, gcc-2.3.2 & 2.3.3 do not exhibit this behavior. Stripping
- cpp and cc1 cause no ld problems. I did notice, though, that while cc1
- gets only about 10% smaller (from 1253376 to 1155072), cpp loses over
- 90% of its size (from 1253376 to 90112).

- Alexander Haig: I prefer to think of it as burning his crops to the ground.
