  20. I received a dozen responses.  To summarize, most everyone referred me
  21. to the emerge package:

  28. One person referred me to diff.el (part of emacs 19) and another to
  29. compare-w.el (part of standard distribution).  I found that emerge is
  30. very close to what I had in mind.
