  15. i wrote the following as a followup in news.groups but it might be
  16. relevant here.

  18. i think "the endless splintering of newsgroups" is a GOOD thing.  the
  19. problem is in news readers.  you should be able to combine small
  20. newsgroups into custom-made virtual groups.

  22. that way people who don't have time for the other splinters can read
  23. the splinters they want to, and you, who want "cross-polination
  24. (sic)", can have that too.  imho everybody pretty much wins since
  25. nobody has to comply with the taxonomy/classification/ontology of
  26. others.

  28. note that this allows the newsgroup equivalent of multiple inheritance
  29. (directed acyclic graph instead of tree), and reduces arguments about
  30. what hierarchy or subhierarchy a proposed newsgroup should go in.

  32. the only reader that does anything close to this that i know of is nn.
  33. i have been urging the gnus community to do it for gnus (a gnu emacs
  34. newsreader written in lisp), but so far nobody's bitten yet (except
  35. for one partial attempt called gnus-topic).

  37. but other news readers will get it; it'll happen.  in the meantime, i
  38. think we should split away without feeling guilty, even though it's a
  39. pain sometimes.  change is in the nature of things; it's good for us
  40. to accept that.
