- The Washington Redskins lost to the Los Angeles Raiders 21-20 at the
- RFK Stadium last Saturday, December 26, as Raiders quarterback Vince
- Evans hit receiver Tim Brown with a 3-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds
- remaining in the game.
-
- The Redskins opened the game as if they were going to control it, holding
- the ball for 10 minutes and using 18 plays to drive from their 19 to
- the Raider 20. However, the Redskins' drive stalled at the Raider 18.
- On first down, linebacker Aaron Wallace dropped Byner for a two-yard
- loss. On second down, Byner got nothing on a draw. On third down,
- Rypien missed Clark on a post pattern. Lohmiller came in and missed
- a 38-yard field goal after Matt Elliott's snap was high and wide.
-
- Midway through the second quarter the Redskins scored at the end of
- a drive when they sputtered down the field, needing 11 plays to get
- 54 yards. Rypien made a nice play, dumping the ball to Byner for 19
- yards on third and 18. Monk dropped a first down pass, but Rypien hit
- Middleton for nine and Howard for seven. Howard hit the turf hard with
- cornerback Lionel Washington on top of him, and got up holding his left
- shoulder. Howard's season ended there with a separated shoulder.
-
- Byner gained three to the 22, and in the next two more plays the Redskins
- got nowhere. Lohmiller made the 39-yard field goal, and the Redskins
- led 3-0.
-
- The halftime score was 3-0.
-
- The Raiders opened the second half by driving to the Redskins 25, but
- when Evans went for Gault in the end zone, Green made a leaping interception.
- Unfortunately, the Redskins couldn't go anywhere, and they finally
- fell behind 7-3 in third quarter when the Raiders drove 69 yards for
- a touchdown. They got the final 41 in one play when Alexander Wright
- leaped over A.J. Johnson and pulled in an Evans pass at the goal line
- with 15 seconds left in the third quarter. A.J. Johnson said that it
- was a great catch.
-
- The Raiders then tried an onside kick to try to take control of the
- game. Redskins' Todd Bowles recovered the ball at the Raiders 49, and,
- after an incomplete Mitchell pass, Monk got behind Raiders' safety Eddie
- Anderson. Rypien hit Monk in stride at the 25, Monk bobbling the ball
- once, twice, three times, before pulling it in after five bobbles and
- jogged into the end zone for a 49-yard touchdown pass and a Redskins
- 10-7 lead.
-
- Four plays later, the Redskins got the play that should have iced it.
- Brown tried a reserve and was forced upfield by Andre Collins. Stokes
- came into the play and stripped the ball from Brown. Collins picked
- it up at the Raiders 45 and took it 39 yards down the right sideline
- before Evans knocked him out of bounds at the Raiders 6. Two plays later,
- Rypien had Clark open in the end zone, but Rypien led Clark too much
- and missed him. The Redskins settled for Lohmiller's 22-yard field
- goal and a 13-7 lead with 12:09 left in the fourth quarter.
-
- Evans calmly took the Raiders down the field on a 12-play, 67-yard drive
- that ended with Nick Bell's five-yard touchdown run for a 14-13 lead
- with 4:03 left in the fourth quarter. The Raiders converted three third
- down plays in a row to keep the drive alive.
-
- Trailing by a point, the Redskins got a big play right off the bat when
- Mitchell returned the kickoff 47 yards to the Redskins 45. Ervins picked
- up gains of six and five yards, then on first down at Raiders 44, Monk
- got behind Torin Dorn and Rypien hit him in stride at the 10-yard line.
- Dorn finally dragged Monk down at the one with two minutes remaining.
- On the next play, Ervins followed guard Mark Schlereth into the end
- zone for a touchdown.
-
- With the 1 minute and 13 seconds remaining in the game, Evans led the
- Raiders on a 8-play, 80 yard drive for Raiders' final and game winning
- touchdown. Key plays in this drive were: Evans pass to Allen for 13
- yards; Allen 8-yard run on third and 1; and Evans pass to Gault for
- 50 to the Redskins 8. Evans hit Tim Brown with a three-yard touchdown
- pass with 13 seconds left in the game.
