- I don't think the last time I posted this worked... so here it is again:
-
- Earlier in this newsgroup, I asked:
-
- >Has anyone successfully installed XFree86 on a 386 running ISC 386ix 2.0.2?
- >I'd like to know whether it's worth me upgrading to a later version
- >of 386ix just to get XWindows happening on this machine.
-
- In summary, yes, it's is possible to run XFree86 under this version.
-
- I received responses from the following people:
- danield@charlie.cs.unlv.edu
- Tim Whitlock <tlw@mph.sm.ucl.ac.uk>
- fritzz@lamont.ldgo.columbia.edu (Fritz Zaucker)
- jtsilla@damon.ccs.northeastern.edu (James Tsillas)
- jdpierc@netcom.com (Jerry D. Pierce)
-
- Thanks for the information you sent... It has made up to mind to go ahead
- and download the binaries (at 2400 baud over a paid line this is not a
- lightweight decision!) as soon as I sort out some video cards.

-
- Funny you should ask. After spending gawd awful amounts of time downloading
- it and then playing with it for most of a day, I installed the binaries for
- XFree86-1.1 that are archived on blancmange.ma.utexas.edu.
-
- It took some playing to get it to work. I had to remove, and then re-install
- the tcp/ip package to get it to work. I suspect I had a problem with it before
- that I just never noticed.
-
- It seems to work fine now, but now I think I need to buy a new Monitor...
- X-windows at 600x400 loses something. :)

-
- I have xfree86 running without any obvious problems on ISC 2.0.2. As I
- recalled I just installed the binaries and off I went with no special
- configuration except the screen resolutions for my VGA card.
-
- The only problem I do have is in using ghostview with ghostscript 2.5.2
- which still breaks each time gs252 is invoked by ghostview....but this
- I assume is to do with compilation of the programs and TCPIP etc rather
- than xfree86 since it also occurred with these latest versions when
- running X386.
-
- Summary....yes it is possible no obvious problems

-
- I installed the binaries and got the server running. I didn't do any
- extensive work with it yet and the PEX stuff might have hung the
- machine, but I am not sure. You should give it a try, with the
- binaries (compiled under ISC 3.2.something I believe) it's no big
- deal.

-
- You can find out by grabbing the binary distribution from
- blancmange.ma.utexas.edu. SO far we've tested on ISC 2.2 and 3.0 but I
- would like to get it tested on 2.0 as well.
-

-
- From: jdpierc@netcom.com (Jerry D. Pierce)
-
- I'm running XFree86 on ISC 3.0, if it's any help. You MUST have
- the TCP/IP package installed for it to run, however. And 4 megs
- is a bare minimum, more along the lines of 8-12 is much better.
- (And save about 80K blocks of disk space for JUST the binaries)
-
- You can upgrade your 2.0.2 to 3.0 for around $300.00 not including
- manuals... Just contact SunSoft directly. (Make sure you ask for
- version 3.01)

- Again, thanks to those who replied.
