- I think your problem is your Window Manager and not your X programming.
- If you install different colormaps into a window, there will happen nothing
- until the Window Manager decides to use this new colormap and installs it to
- the server.

- I install the cmaps directly to the server to get it running (for neat
- fade-effects for instance).

- Some WM's also complain about users installing new server cmaps (what is
- in fact no ICCCM compliant feature), but thats another story.
