This is probably some sort of FAQ, buttttttttttt...

My grep on the FAQs for "patch" didn't reveal anything interesting, so
I'm wondering: Given that you don't have source for the version of X
that is on a particular machine (you're running vendor code or you
simply decided keeping megs of source online wasn't worth it), how do
you determine what patchlevel is running?  Even with the source, I
don't see any file being updated with the information other than
"bug-report", which doesn't get installed as part of the standard X
distribution as far as I can tell.  I find this a bit humorous 'cause,
if you look at the "patch" program shipped with the R5 distribution,
you get a message to the effect that you can "save people a lot of
grief by keeping a patchlevel.h file".  :)
