- The choice of the Megaplex here is a good one, meaning that you can
- start with 24 ports and just upgrade 24 ports at a time up to 96.
-
- But 24 phone lines to start? Does this mean you will have no need for
- terminals or serial printers on your own site? If you have a Megaplex,
- you certainly are in a position to avoid the PC's com ports.

- Not only this, but your definition of acceptable performance may be
- different from mine. If you have a siginificant number of users still
- coming in at 2400baud, you can probably get away with more load than other
- situations may tolerate.
-
- Regardless of the number of ports, when you get to a point where
- performance is unacceptable, and you've tuned the system as well as you
- can, then you network in a second CPU. I have installed a few systems
- with Megaplexes, and the most ports I have installed is 3 multiplexers
- on a 486-33. While this gives 72 ports, I'd say that only about 60 were
- active. Performance is borderline acceptable (to me) on conventional
- office automation.
-
- If you go the route with Suns, you can also hang on as many ports as you
- want using TCP/IP terminal servers, but this will be more expensive.
-
- Good luck!
