- We are planning to start a free public-access system in the Portland area
- offering both BBS-style access to Usenet newsgroups as well as shell
- access, Internet access, and UUCP connectivity. We will start with 24
- incoming lines, but if it is popular (and we expect that a free system
- will be very popular) we will grow to as many lines as are needed to
- handle demand. We also plan to get at least a 56K connection to the
- Internet through Northwest-Net or Sprint. (Does AT&T also offer
- this?)

- Although we don't want to spend more than we have to, we also want to
- do it right. Our corporate philosophy has always been to do things
- right, even if it costs more.

- Right now, our plan is to buy a 486-50 EISA machine, a couple large
- SCSI disks, and an Equinox Megaplex multi-port (up to 96 ports) card.
- This would seem to give us the most value for the money, at about
- $10,000. Modems and a router will be on top of that.

- I think that if we use PCs running Unix, we will have to abandon our
- familiar ISC 3.0 and go with a SVR4. Otherwise, we may start running
- into inode limits and other vestiges of releases past.

- Unfortunately, we don't really know what our load mix will be like. A
- 486-50 might have no problem with 90 users sitting reading news, though
- the situation could change quickly if 30 of those people are doing file
- downloads. I really have no idea what kind of load our proposed setup
- could really support.

- The other alternative is to use Suns. But I have no idea how many BBS
- users a Sparc 2 or Sparc 10 could handle either. And I don't know of
- any multi-port solutions that could support the numbers we're talking.
- So we would probably have to go with an EThernet terminal server, thus
- adding even more expense and system load.
