- Lately, few people have complained that my posting
- announcing uploads are somewhat excessive in length.
- Let's clarify a little bit.
-
- 1-US4BINR is a binary archive for UNIX System V Release 4
- on 386 and 486 PCs. It DOES NOT CARRY SOURCE, only BINARY
- EXECUTABLE programs with documentation. While there is plenty
- of archive site on the net, few carry binaries, few
- targets specific UNIX architecture.
-
- US4BINR is modeled after the SIMTEL20 and GARBO examples.
- Uploads are done in a control fashion.
-
- For many of us, those posting are not new. Some complained
- that these announces are getting old. True, the packages are
- available for some time on the net. But in source form. For many,
- the availability in binary form is NEW for the UNIX they have.
-
- In this regard, US4BINR
- is playing catchup. You should see most of the oldies
- uploaded here (us4binr) sooner or later. After a while, you will see original
- stuff (or more current stuff) tightly following the sources release.
- Sometime, there won't be any source release :-(
-
- 2-comp.unix.sysv386 and comp.unix.sys5.r4 are TEMPORARY
- homes for this project. Just to make people aware that
- binary site for SVR4 386 do exist.
-
- I am currently writting the charter
- of two new groups, comp.binaries.unix386.archives and
- comp.binaries.unix386.archives.d.
-
- 3-This kind of posting are common for other OS. Just
- look at comp.binaries.ibm.pc.archives. If fact, these
- posting are quite effective, because people won't download
- something just to find out that this is not at all what they
- need. Of course this is done in a special newsgroup.
-
- There are some tools to maintain a local database
- of all announces. Using the net to do so is fairly
- efficient. It avoids the download of a complete index
- everytime someone is looking for something. This is the
- reason why posting a single line is not so useful.
-
- 4-Once in a while, I will post a list of the
- latest uploads. One line per uploads. Again immitating
- what is done at SIMTEL and GARBO. This posting will be post
- in comp.binaries.unix386.archives. For a short
- period I will crosspost to comp.unix.sysv386 just to advertise
- the existence of c.b.u.a
-
- You should see the official proposition of the newsgroup
- creation shortly.
-
-
- Thanks!
- Comments are welcome!
