-
- There was an interesting discussion of source licensing the other day on
- comp.os.vms. Jamie Hanrahan of Kernal Mode Consulting said that VMS source
- is available on CD ROM. He said that "you don't have to 'justify' anything,
- just sign a source license agreement, and pay about $2200."
-
- He made what I thought was a very compelling arguement that in many
- respects VMS is just as "open" as other operating systems such as Unix,
- and maybe even more so.
-
- The discussion of which system is more "open" can be fun and enlightening
- (that's why we all read news, right?) but it's sort of like arguing about
- how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. "Open" is marketing
- drivel that obscures the real issues, like the availability of source
- licensing, documented and published interfaces, and compliance with
- widely used standards. The word "open" conveys little or no meaning
- in the context of computers or operating systems these days.
