  16. Personally I think the *only* important issue involved is what Novel would
  17. do about the BSDI suit.  Control of unix is slowly but inexorably slipping
  18. out of the hands of the ``holder of the proprietary source code''.

  20. Novel may feel that by agressivly pushing this suit they can nip this trend
  21. in the bud, but the true result will simply be to slow it down.

  23. Or they may feel that they can gain goodwill by settling it.  This will allow
  24. the above trend to continue at a faster rate, eventually leading to reduced
  25. margins for Novel.

  27. Either way, should this transaction proceed, Novel will have control over
  28. whether the next several years are pleasant and productive or unpleasant and
  29. contentious for many of us who are pursuing the freed unix path...
