- I realized the technical arguments put forth in this newsgroup with respect
- to the performance of DRAM based cards such as the 801. All I can say is
- that two employees at S3 corp and two vga manufactures have not experienced
- performance degradation at high clock rates with the 801 or 805 at least not
- as stated in this newsgroup. I am going to try to get hold of a high
- resolution monitor to resolve this issue and will report back faithfully my
- findings.
-
- Now moving on to more controversy, the January issue of Byte Magazine has a
- hardware review on vga cards titled "Making Windows Rock and Roll" on page 202.
- Please note that the tests were run under DOS.
-
- All benchmarks were run at 1024x768 with 256 colors, except for the some cards
- like the Kinston ViewRx which allowed only 16 colors at 1024x768. The refresh
- rate which the test were ran at is unknown at this moment.
-
- This is how the actix 801 fair against the ATI Ultra Pro (mach 32):
- 1 2 3
- Actix GraphicEngine32 : 4.93 20.51 3.18
- ATI Ultra Pro (mach 32) : 4.50 19.36 2.88
-
-
- Legend of test names :
- 1 Basic graphics index
- 2 BitBlt Index
- 3 Text Index
-
- For full details, please read the January issue of Byte Magazine.
-
-
- The Actix GraphicEngine32 lists price is $199 with 1MB of memory.
- The ATI Ultra Pro list price is $799 :-)
- The list prices figures were obtained from the Byte article.
-
- Palo Alto MicroComputers is a dealer for both Orchid and Actix their
- phone number is 415-493-8209, at least around here they carry one
- of the cheapest prices.
-
-
- Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
