- I have the problem with installation XFree86 in 386BSD.
- I have Diamond SpeedStar 24. (in specification list DSS + SIERRA
- HIcolor, label in the chip -- Diamond SpeedStar 24, BTW is it the
- same)
- There is a note in README file that this board does support
- XFree86. Does it mean I can't run XFree in any case, even at
- least black and white or some kind of generic VGA.
- Is it possible for a usual person (not UNIX hacker) to
- install XFree. Or should I understand internal structure and
- read all 11 volumes? I only want to USE it and even not write
- programs for it.
- The version Xfree I got three days ago from
- agate.berkeley.edu /pub/386BSD/0.1-ports.
- Will I have the same problem with Linix? (becasue Xfree is
- the same for both of them).

-
- This is what I did.
-
- load as root
- untar all files
- cd /usr/X386/lib/X11
- # read all files in this directory and understood less then half
- # of them. I am not UNIX expert just would like to have it with
- # Xwindows on my PC.
- etc/x386install
- shutdown -r now
- .....
- #load as root again
- #Try 1. do not modify Config file and then
- xdm -nodaemon
- #blinking of the screen for 1 minutes and then something like
- #this
- #
- # /-----------------\
- # |..... |
- # |xdm -nodaemon |
- # | | <- cursor at the beginig of this line
- # \-----------------/
- #
- # Only text no windows
-
-
- #Try2.
- #load to MS DOS
- # clock.exe ET4000
- # 21 25 61 65 21 25 61 65
- #
- xclk -h 61 800
- # get some number put them to the Config file
- xdm -nodaemon
- # the same result as above. Blinking for about one minutes and
- # then the same screen. I decided to play with the modeDB numbers
- # but never get permanent picture
