- Sounds like a power supply problem.
-
- Measure the voltage of the disk's power. (When two of mine went from
- "occasionally misbehaving" to "won't work anymore", I discovered that
- their 12-V side had gone to approx. 6 V. Took out one disk, power was
- at 8 V, disk flaky again. Exchanged the power supply and the problem
- went away.)
-
- Try attaching the disk to another power supply, preferably with no other
- devices attached to it. Small PCish power supplies are quite cheap nowadays.
- Get 1 A per disk (at 12 V) if you can configure your disks to delay
- spin-up, 2 A if not.
-
- Try connecting two medium-sized Tantal condensators to both the 5-V and
- 12-V side. Another of my disks stopped annoying me after I did that.
- I soldered them directly onto the disk drive's logic board; a better
- solution would be to integrate them into the plug from the power supply.
-
- The disk motor might also be at fault, though I doubt that because your disk
- works most of the time.
