- I've gotten several requests from people on the newgroup
- to explain why the ability to turn of reten on the ost
- tape drive doesn't exist on AIX 3.2. Specifically, they
- are asking why the drives that have the IBM logo on them
- get configured as "ost" and don't have the ability to
- turn of reten as on the 150 mb 1/4" tape. I'm with
- IBM service - level 3 - change team - bug hunters, etc.....
- I'm the SCSI device driver guy, so this is the real poop:
-
- As you know, IBM is trying to be more competitive in the
- market place. In the previous early releases of AIX, some
- hardware such as tape drives were gated to the support being
- available in the software so that they would be recognized
- as IBM drives. In AIX 3.2, the support for other-scsi-tape
- was finally delivered. Additionally, other IBM divisions started
- selling their tape drives in the open market without having to
- wait for the software to catch up. This is why the 525 mb drive
- came out with the IBM logo, but no support on AIX. HOWEVER, this
- support has actually come out. This can be found with PTF U407435.
- Some people have mentioned that they are unwilling or uncomfortable
- with adding more PTFs to their system. Well, that's the only way
- you're going to get the ability to turn of reten on your tape drive,
- sorry. This leads us to the next question, why isn't the reten
- switch available for ost drives in SMIT. The answer
- is that with "ost" you get what you pay for. This reten ability
- is device specific to the drive's microcode. We can't predict what other
- manufacturers have in terms of reten, so we didn't include it. If we
- were to send this "no reten" command to a tape drive that didn't have
- the reten bit, would it freak out and reset the bus? We can't be sure.
- That is why this switch only exists for the IBM drives (in SMIT).
-
- And for Benson Margulie, I did submit a DCR to development asking to
- put the reten switch for ost drives anyway. It was rejected as not
- practical for the reasons listed above.
-
- Esa and Benson, I would recommend picking up PTF U407435 to solve your
- reten problem.
