- We run CATIA on some RS/6000's here, it seems to work just
- fine. It appears to have all the functionality that the
- mainframe versions have. It is CATIA. Some parts of it are a bit
- annoying. It is clearly a "direct port" from MVS (as
- direct as one could hope to be). It makes HPGL plot files
- that run most HP (same as IBM) plotters. It won't autofeed the
- HP7550's though, but it's easy to write a filter.
-
- It's not too hard to modify the user's environment, but if you
- don't know anything about CATIA, a-priori, the documentation
- won't help you learn. Basically, the docs suck. In addition,
- the IBM telephone support is (I think) just a direct line to
- Dassault Systems. (If you plan to buy CATIA from IBM!) I called
- the support line once, they responded a month later. That's not
- very good for such an expensive product. Maybe it was just because
- I was percieved as an "internal" customer (i.e. worthless piece of
- s--t).
-
-
- There is a product that some guys in IBM Manassas worked on
- called ICEEE, all the doc's are currently labeled Internal Use
- Only but it may be available to the rest of the world soon (just speculation!).
- Manassas is the Federal Systems Division. ICEEE is a reasonably
- good, Motif-menu driven system that provides easy CATIA model
- transfer from MVS systems that are running TCP/IP to RS/6000's.
- It's easy for designers to use who know nothing about UNIX, etc.
- CATIA provides some sort of utiliy to transfer models between
- MVS and AIX but it doesn't look very nice and easy to use. ICEEE allows
- one to maintain model comonality on the RS/6000 and MVS.
-
- ICEEE does do some annoying things, however. It "takes over" some of
- the normal operating system functions (like on some of the older versions
- it wouldn't let user's change their passwords without being given
- permission). The interface itself is a bit slow. But, our designers
- seem to like it. It also allows you to use mainframe-attached output
- devices.
-
- If you have any more questions let me know.
