- We back up about 40 RS6000s (3.1.6 and 3.2.2) daily by
- inode. We have had various problems with rdump and
- backup, but they were corrected by new versions of
- /etc/rdump, /etc/restbyinode, and /etc/backbyinode. At
- 3.1.6, IBM sent new versions out on diskette, which were
- easy to install. At 3.2.2, I received new versions in the
- form of a PTF tape, with the usual zillions of PTFs. I
- bypassed the installation of the PTFs to avoid the horror
- stories that others have posted, found the binaries on the
- tape, and installed them.
-
- Occasionally, we get what appear to be disk hardware problems
- during a backup, usually in the form of "bread" error messages.
- These are almost always caused by a busy filesystem; repeating
- the backup takes care of the problem.
-
- If you are having problems unrelated to busy filesystems,
- I'd suggest simply installing 3.2.2 versions of
- /etc/backbyinode and rdump. Of course, the risk is yours
- - I won't guarantee they'll run properly, but this approach
- fixed problems for me back at 3.1.6.
