- Backups - how do you do them ??
-
- We are in the process of reevaluating how we in the Computer Science Dept
- of the University of Arizona do backups of the data being stored on our hard
- disk media.
-
- Currently we have approx 20G of disk space evenly dispersed across 4 Unix
- servers (Suns under 4.1.1 and Sequent under DYNIX 3.2.0). Once a month we
- bring each server down to single user mode and perform a level 0 backup to
- 2G Exabyte tapes using the program "/etc/dump". Once a week we perform a
- level 1 incremental dump and on all other days we perform level 2 incremental
- dumps. The Exabyte tape drives are attached to two different machines on the
- local Ethernet and as such the majority of the data is being written to a
- "remote" tape drive.
-
- The possibility exists that we may increase the amount of disk space on our
- servers by a factor of 2 (up to 40G) in the near future, thus prompting this
- reevaluation.
-
- Items of interest to us:
- . is there a better alternative to "/etc/dump"
- . do you bring your system down to single user mode to do a level 0
- . where would you locate you backup media on the net (local or remote)
- . how many 2G or 5G Exabyte tape drives would be optimal for backing
- up 40G spread across 4 servers
- . are 5G Exabytes a good choice for backup media
- . what frequency of level 0 (or equivalent) and incrementals would
- be recommended.
- . do you use an automated jukebox/carousel with your tape drive and
- in what manner do you utilize it.
- . anyone using different strategies (e.g., back up only system files
- and let the users beware? Backup a fixed home directory for
- each user, and have "scratch disks" for files that don't fit
- in a user's home directory?)
- . anyone using alternate technologies (e.g., RAID disk arrays, etc.)
-
- Thanks in advance
- John C.
