  20. slembe.ifi.uio.no is an aging Sun 3/280, and used to off-load ifi.uio.no
  21. when that machine was also a poor old Sun 3/280.  ftp.ifi.uio.no pointed
  22. to slembe at this time.  I don't remember how long ago ftp.ifi.uio.no
  23. started pointing to ifi.uio.no, but it's more than six months ago, soon
  24. after we upgraded it to a Sun 4/75.

  26. _Please_ use FTP.IFI.UIO.NO, and please help stamp out this old record.
  27. slembe is likely to expire in the near future, but ftp.ifi.uio.no has
  28. always worked and will always work.

  30. I find it very sad that Archie counter-acts the use of aliases to move
  31. services around on machines as they are upgraded.  And don't use IP
  32. addresses for reference purposes.  One significant effect of domain
  33. names is to be able to keep the name while changing the number.

  35. The morale of the story is to use FTP.IFI.UIO.NO, and let the domain
  36. name system (DNS) figure out which machine this is, and where it is.
  37. (Software that doesn't use the DNS for name lookups have no business on
  38. the Internet, anyway, and should be fought with all means available.)

  40. If anybody knows how to tell Archie, I'd be delighted to learn about it.
