  14. The FreeLore Project is an initiative to create a
  15. large quantity of educational material in freely
  16. distributable form.  The project will almost certainly
  17. use SGML/Hytime in some form.  Your input is crucial to
  18. the success of this volunteer project.

  22. FreeLore is useful information that is stored in
  23. electronic or magnetic media and has a copyright
  24. similar to that of GNU software.  FreeLore is not
  25. a proprietary name or product, but an idea.  In
  26. essence, it is the generalization of GNU software
  27. to any kind of useful information.

  29. You are hereby cordially invited to join the FreeLore
  30. Project as a charter member.

  32. The provisional purpose of the FreeLore Project is
  33. to organize volunteers to:

  35. -- promote and encourage the production of free
  36. educational and other useful materials
  37. (``FreeLore'') in the electronic and
  38. electronically-derived print media;
  39.  
  40. -- to define standards for FreeLore;
  41.  
  42. -- to promote active discussion of issues facing
  43. the producers of FreeLore;
  44.  
  45. -- to capture and enhance (markup) public-domain data for
  46. inclusion in FreeLore;
  47.  
  48. -- to provide information to persons interested in
  49. using or writing FreeLore;
  50.  
  51. -- to promote efficient use of networks as a means of
  52. providing access to FreeLore;

  54. -- to organize and provide support services such
  55. as archiving, markup, cataloguing,
  56. self-registration of (self-)published materials,
  57. and software maintenance;
  58.  
  59. -- to promote cataloguing standards for FreeLore;
  60.  
  61. -- to encourage electronic-media as the primary media
  62. of scholarly discussion and journal publication;
  63.  
  64. -- to create copylefted or public-domain software for
  65. creating, accessing, and viewing FreeLore;

  71. an agenda.  Discussion will be mostly by email, and
  72. not necessarily conducted in alt.uu.future.
