- There are a number of products that can do this. I'm aware
- of the following vendors:
-
- Avalanche Technology: FastTag and SGML Hammer products.
- IBM: TextTagger/ESA, which is based on Avalanche's technology.
- Zandar Corp: TagWrite for Windows
- Software Exoterica: Omnimark
-
- The Avalanche, IBM, and Exoterica products are all powerful
- but somewhat complex, intended for industrial-strength
- applications. TagWrite is fairly easy to use, but doesn't
- have the full programability of Omnimark or FastTag.
-
- I'm sure there are other products, but the above are the
- ones I have information on.
-
- I've spent a few hours playing with TagWrite and found it fairly easy
- to set up transforms, and I imagine that for tagging of flat ascii
- that has predictable patterns, its a good value, as it's much less
- expensive than the other products listed. It does not incorporate an
- SGML parser, so it is not suited to full-function untagging
- applications, unless I've missed something. It can untag SGML markup
- that either does not use attributes or for which the attributes are in
- predictable places or can be ignored (not the case in the untagging
- applications I have). The mapping tables are defined using a
- Windows interface, which once you've worked through the tutorials
- provided in the documentation, is fairly easy to use.
