  21. OK, maybe we all agree that we don't like it when we are not
  22. given choices by Sun and are forced into spending a lot of
  23. time and money to get the new stuff.  But, ask yourself:
  24.  
  25.   -- did you really think any computer you purchase
  26.      will be viable for more than a few years?
  27.   -- choices cost money!  [for Sun to support multiple
  28.      hardware platforms and possibly multiple operating
  29.      systems costs A LOT -- any company is simply going
  30.      to amortize the cost over all the systems (which
  31.      means we all pay more)]
  32.   -- any vendor you choose will approach the problem
  33.      in the same way:

  35.      * HP has 4 architectures: PA-RISC, 3000, 68xxx, x86
  36.      * DEC has 4 architectures: Alpha, VAX, MIPS, x86
  37.      * IBM has ? architectures: RS/6000, ...
  38.  
  39.      I will bet anything that the number of architectures
  40.      will be smaller next year, and the year after that.
  41.  
  42. Anything Sun does will hurt some people and help others.  We
  43. have to take the hurt with the help, and move on.
