- Hello world!
-
- First let me tell you that this group is not received at my site, so I
- prefer any answer on this question by e-mail.
-
- Here is the situation:
-
- I inherited a Sun 3/50 with a nonworking tape unit and a 60-70MB Micropolis disk.
- I'd like to get the thing operational again. I have manuals and a case of 60MB
- tapes, including SunOS 3.5. I'd like to replace the Micropolis with a Maxtor 83xxS
- I have lying around here (340MB).
-
- I need some help diagnosing the problem with the tape first. When i boot,
- the tape is seen on the SCSI port. It sees the tape unit as st0 after it has
- detected the Micropolis at sd0. Like this:
-
- sd0 at si0 slave 0
- sd0: <Micropolis 1325 cyl 1022 alt 2 hd 8 sec 17>
- st0 at si0 slave 32
- zs0 at obio etc. etc.
-
- When the machine was operational at its previous location, the tape would
- not do anything but give error messages like "Tape not loaded" when trying to do
- anything with it (just trying to load a tape would give that message, even before
- trying to let any program get to it). Currently, the tape unit just hangs.
- I opened the tape/disk case and as far as I can see the tape is loaded
- correctly, but it does not do anything else.
-
- I am not very experienced with Sun 3 machines, but I bet many of you out
- there are. For instance, if I see those boot messages I wonder: sd0 at SCSI
- Interface 0 slave 0 sounds OK to me, but slave 32 for the tape sounds suspicious.
- Shouldn't that be a number between 1 and 6? Shouldn't I also see a message like
- st0: <Wangtek etc. etc.>? Is the SCSI interface of the tape unit broken? Or did I
- push the SCSI-connector in the wrong connector (SCSI in)? Or should I check with a
- different cable? How can I diagnose this?
-
- And when the tape unit works (or has been replaced or whatever) can I use
- my Maxtor instead of the Micropolis? It is a Maxtor XT-8380S if I recall correctly.
-
- Thanks in advance for any advice,
-
