- We have a CAD/CAM application, which is very graphics intensive, that is
- behaving in strange ways on a Sparcstation 10/30 GX. In particular, we are
- seeing CPU performance about twice the speed of a Sparcstation 2, but our
- overall graphics performance (both measured by internal benchmarks) on the
- 10/30 is about 2/3 the speed of a Sparc 2!
-
- Our application is Sunview based and still uses the old pixwin graphics
- library. The Sparc 2 is running SunOS 4.1.1 and the Sparc 10/30 is running
- SunOS 4.1.3. We see the same results on the 10/30 under both Sunview and
- Openwindows 3.0. Both systems use GX graphics, whose performance is supposed
- to scale up with CPU performance. Not in this case. The identical
- executable was run on both systems (compiled and linked under 4.1.1, using
- Sun ANSI C 1.1).
-
- Has anyone else seen similar results? Any ideas how there could be such a
- large discrepancy between relative CPU and graphics performance? The CPU
- performance is slightly better than I expected based on comments from other
- people (though still less than Sun's official benchmarks), but our
- application does a lot of interactive graphics and our users' initial
- reactions to the 10/30 has been quite negative. We are in the process of
- upgrading our Sunview/pixwin port, which may or may not give better results,
- but that doesn't help current users.
