- You will occasionally get media errors, but it shouldn't hang the system.
- Chances are either the box has incorrect firmware for Suns, or something is
- misconfigured in whatever DIP switches it has. If a manual came with it,
- check the configuration. Then contact the vendor who sold it to you. Most
- of them are pretty good about helping out even if it isn't still on warranty.
- I have seen misconfigured Exabytes cause frequent bus resets even when not
- in use.
-
- It could also just be that the drive has intermittent problems.

- I have to ask ... are you *cleaning* the drive yourself? Exabytes need to
- be cleaned regularly, just like every magnetic tape device on the face of
- the planet. Make *absolutely* sure you are using cleaning tapes designed
- for Exabytes, not 8mm video cleaning tapes. The latter are abrasive and
- will not only damage the heads but also void any warranty/contract you have
- on it.
-
- The tapes aren't perfect, you will occasionally get media errors that the
- Exabyte can't work around.

-
- Get them to swap it out if it's on contract. These drives have loads of
- settable switches and lots of things that can go wrong.
-
- We once saw this problem on an RS/6000 system with one of these 9-track drives,
- and it turned out that the battery in the drive that preserves the SCSI ID was
- bad. Otherwise they have been superb tape drives for us.
