  12. Sun is probably "abandoning" SunOS 4.x to live up to the well-publicized
  13. committment they and AT&T made several years ago to actually *use* the
  14. UNIX OS they would jointly develop (ie, SVR4) on the machines they sold.

  16. Contrast this with the complete lack of committment on their
  17. competitor's parts in developing OSF/1 shortly thereafter.  Neither IBM
  18. nor DEC, nor any of the other OSF players ever actually committed to
  19. *using* OSF/1 on their machines.  Sun and AT&T's committment ensured
  20. they would provide engineering support to the product development.
  21. DEC and IBM ensured they would get advertising support.
