- Occasionally, our system hangs when dumping to the Exabyte.
- Need to L1-A to reboot.
-
- We get the following console message:
-
- st1: Error for command 'write', Error Level:'Fatal'
- Block: 16 File Number: 0
- Sense Key: Media Error
- Vendor (Exabyte 8mm Helical Scan) Unique Error Code: 0x3
-
- So far, this only seems to happen when dumping and in single user mode,
- but, statistically, that is 90% of our use of the drive.
-
- Configuration:
- SunOS 4.1.1, SPARC 2
- Exabyte EXB-8500 [I don't know the firmware or ROM level; I need
- to open the box and take a look]
-
- Seems to me that it could be one (or a combination) of several problems:
-
- Exabyte's problem - the drive is hanging the SCSI bus
- SunOS problem - the st device driver is not dealing with the error
- correctly. If it's still waiting for the device to
- write the last block, the driver should at least timeout.
- SunOS problem - the hardware has indeed hung the SCSI bus, but the SunOS SCSI
- driver hasn't detected it.
- dump problem - dump doesn't handle errors from write() correctly.
- (This seems less likely, since dump clearly handles
- other kinds of write errors)
-
- Feedback from support organizations so far ---
- Sun - "It's not a Sun tape drive; we don't support it.
- The drives that Sun buys from Exabyte are "different"
- I can't tell you how they'er different. Contact your vendor"
- Exabyte - "We can give you a firmware upgrade via tape. Easy to
- install. Don't know if it will solve your problem."
-
- R-SQUARED - No response yet. Support seems to understaffed this week,
- like everywhere else...
-
-
- I'm not pleased with Sun's response.
- Even if the non-Sun hardware is totally screwed up, SunOS
- ought not hang.
- Makes me wonder why we spend
- so much money on Sun support contracts.
-
- So...
- Have you experienced such a problem?
- (I mean, with the EXB-500 and system
- hangs -- not mediocre support from Sun. I *know* your answer to that question.)
-
- Thanks!
