  14. I was just wondering if someone out there knew how
  15. to boot a machine over the network.  I've tried and tried
  16. but no such luck.  Here's what happened:

  18. I tried to make harpo a boot server for the client groucho.  I'm
  19. trying to update operating system via the network rather than
  20. lugging around the silly CDROM drive all the time.
  21.  
  22. I ran "add_client" on harpo and added groucho to it's list
  23. to make it a boot server.  The program is not very robust and
  24. I had to delete and add the client a few times to get it to
  25. go through all the motions.

  27. The program "add_client" puts the proper files (supposedly) into
  28. /export and the proper entry (supposedly) in /etc/bootparams, but
  29. rpc.bootparamd will not run properly.  When run in debug mode, I
  30. get the error:

  32. harpo# rpc.bootparamd -d
  33. In debug mode
  34. bp_getclntent failed.
  35. bp_getclntent failed.

  37. and it just hangs.  I cannot figure out why it won't run.  As a result,
  38. groucho can get it's IP address, but hangs after that and says:

  40. No bootparam server responding; still trying
  41.  
  42. Note:   I am running NIS with (I hope) valid host and ethers entries
  43. in the database.  Harpo is running SunOS 4.1.3 and groucho is hanging
  44. right now with 4.1.1 Rev B.
