  26. "Locking" the desktop (per se) would be a bad idea.  This database must be used
  27. by all Macintosh clients to find out how to draw the desktop on the screen.  So,
  28. do not lock the files, or take away everyone's rights to that directory (that 
  29. wouldn't do much anyway).  If you are looking to control the icon views in a 
  30. given folder, just change the ownership of a folder to SUPERVISOR.  Then 
  31. as SUPERVISOR arrange the icons in the folder as needed.  All other non-SUPERVIS
  32. OR users will see that same layout when they open the folder.  These non-SUPER-
  33. VISOR users will be able to re-arrange things during their current session, but
  34. when they close the volume or logout, and re-open the folder, the icons will be
  35. arraned in the original fashion (that SUPERVISOR had used).  This really works!

  37. It is rather labour intensive to "clean-up" ALL of the folders on your
  38. volumes.  Is this so important?  Wouldn't it be better just to view by name?
  39. With System 7, one can view by name and use the control panels/views to adjust
  40. the size of the icons and fonts.  So, if you have bad eyes (like mine) just 
  41. view by name and use the largest possible fonts and icons.  It really works!
  42. Besides, it is really for each individual user to decide on how they would like
  43. to see icons on their Macintosh.
