- I am having several problems upgrading an ELS v2.0a Netware system
- to 3.11. The network which works fine with v2.0a consists
- of a 486 server (4mbRAM, 150MBHDD), several 286 diskless
- workstation, and one diskfull workstation. I am trying to upgrade all
- of the systems but the 486 server is the real problem.
-
- First of all, the upgrade procedure does not work with our Mountain
- tape drive unit. When I run UPGRADE from one of the workstations (this
- one does have a local hard disk), the procedure hangs when it trys
- to start the backup to tape. I have to reboot that workstation
- to bring it back. I had to abort the upgrade procedure and just
- back things up using the mountain software which works fine in the
- same configuration over the network.
-
- Secondly, the 486 server will not boot DOS from a newly installed
- 340MB Maxtor IDE drive that was just installed. During the boot
- process, if there is no floppy available, I get a "Missing Operating
- System" error message. If I boot from floppy, I have no problems
- using the hard disk. Netware 3.11 builds just fine on the hard disk.
- The previous installer does have a "Fourth Dimension Quick Boot
- Rom Rev. 5.32" on the ethernet card and since I am getting a 4th
- Dimension banner right before the failure to boot error, I attributed
- the problem to that card. Anyone know what this boot prom does (or
- doesn't do)?
-
- Lastly, once the 486 system was built, I could not recognize any workstations
- on the net. The workstations "Fail To Find Server" . I may have
- the network set up wrong (network numbers etc.) but so far I haven't
- seen anything obvious. I put the old ELS disk back in and things still
- work so I know the physical layer (ie. cables, cards, hardware) works at
- least under that older version.
-
- Anyone out there seen upwards compatibility problems with 16bit
- ethernet cards? Maybe I am having conflict problems with the new
- IDE controller and the ethernet card in the server. The drivers
- (ISADIS and NE2000.LAN) load with no problems though.
-
- Any help is greatly appreciated.
