  22. I had the same problem when I first installed Emacs 2.0.  (I'm running
  23. Emacs 2.1 now -- I'm waiting to upgrade to NextStep 3.1 rather than
  24. 3.0).  My memory is a bit hazy, but the problem had to do with Emacs
  25. trying to get my IP address through my hostname.  Since I'm not on any
  26. networks, I just added an entry to the hosts directory in netinfo
  27. giving my hostname the IP address of localhost.  I left localhost in
  28. there since some programs expect it to be there.  The resulting file
  29. looks like this:

  31.         $ nidump hosts .
  32.         127.0.0.1       biff
  33.         127.0.0.1       localhost
  34.         255.255.255.255         broadcasthost
  35.  
  36. (Biff is my hostname.)  But since you're on a network, I think you
  37. would have to put your real IP address in there, instead of 127.0.0.1.
  38. But I assume you had to do that to get SLIP to work.

  44. The poster used HostManager to add his system as a host, and now Emacs works  
  45. fine.
