  12. The following concerns the behavior of mail on the NeXT when reading 
  13. mail through the Terminal application or, in particular, from a remote 
  14. terminal. Thus this is not about NeXTmail (the App). We have noticed 
  15. two types of behavior:

  17. 1) When you login and type "mail" at the prompt, you see your mail which 
  18. is read from the file /usr/spool/mail/username. You read your mail and 
  19. quit (q). Your mail (read and unread) is stored in /usr/spool/mail/username 
  20. (unless you *explicitly* save it.)
  21.  
  22. 2) Again you login and type "mail" at the prompt. Your mail is read in 
  23. from the file /usr/spool/mail/username and you read your mail. This time 
  24. when you quit (q), all mail that is read is moved to ~/Mailboxes/Active.mbox
  25. /mbox (or ~/mbox or another designated folder) and the unread mail is 
  26. retained in /usr/spool/mail/username.

  28. According to the man page for mail, (2) is the expected behavior. However, 
  29. (1) is the behavior we are now seeing. One user claims it used to work like 
  30. (2), but that recently (also about the time I installed popper on the NeXT) 
  31. that it changed to (1). I checked three other (non-NeXT) Unix machines 
  32. and two behaved like (1) and one like (2) [hmmmm..sorry about that.] 
  33. So my questions are:

  35. a) What is the proper behavior and/or what parameters need to be set 
  36. to get it one way or the other?

  38. b) Does popper have anything to do with this behavior?
