- Help.
- I have had my NeXT for a year and a half. It is a mono with 8/200
- running 25MHz with 2.1. Now it seems to be running at half that speed. I
- have noticed quite a few problems recently that may be linked to something
- I see in the private/adm/messages referring to the boot process:
- Physical memory 8 Megabytes
- Available memory 7.03 Megabytes
- I don't remember old ../messages but could I have lost some
- functional memory?
- Here are some things that are happening:
- 1. When I launch an Improv file that uses PresentationBuilder,
- Presentation Builder doesn't start up automatically anymore.
- 2. All Apps take forever to launch
- 3. If I log out of /me to root and log back into /me again (not having done
- anything in root) I am no longer able to launch any application,
- from the dock or elsewhere. The App Icon will highlight but almost
- immediately reverts to its unlauched appearance. I have to turn the power
- off to get anything to work
- 4. I woke up this morning to find that BackSpace Analog clock was frozen
- in one position on my screen. It was 5am but the clock was frozen at 2
- o'clock. This is a first time event. What the @@#$%@% is going on. I
- could not override the system with keyboard emergency power off combos.
- Nothing registered. I had to pull the plug. When I powered up,
- log on went as usual; but nothing out of the ordinary appeared in ../messages.
- 5. When I have MicrophonePro running a script that counts down time to
- next dial out retry (when first call is busy) and display time remaining
- to the next call on the window, the Backspace screensaver may come on as
- expected, but the analog clock moves slow and jerky and I hear my hard
- drive scratching with every jerky clock movement. It returns to normal
- when I quit MicroPhonePro.
- Stuff that I usually have on the doc includes Cassandra1.5 ( which
- incedently sets off the alarm at the appropriate time but
- ingores the snooze setting so the rooster sounds repeatedly until I
- turn it off [bug, Jiro?], BackSpace, Improv, PresentationBuilder,
- MicrophonePro, PrintTester, SimonSay, Frame, and Illustrator.
- I would appreciate any insight into my problem/problems. In
- medicine, we look for a unifying diagnosis. I hope that is the case here.
- Do I need to find a sour memory chip? Do I need to bring the black beast
- in for a tune up? Thanks to everyone who opines over this post.
- Be well.
