- --Basically, anything that would waste your RAM disc will hose your

-
- -I did this once (hosed my RAM system disk intentionally to see what
- -would happen), and restarting would not work. However, shutting down
- -(by the switch on the back) caused the computer to erase the RAM disk
- -and I booted fine.
-
- On my 140, about 2/3's of the time, the power switch fixed things.
- Some of the time, however, even that wouldn't work, and I had to
- turn off the RAM disc via a startup floppy. This small percentage of
- difficult to recover crashes and the large amount of RAM I needed to
- devote to a RAM disc just to get a sufficently configured system
- booted made me go back to using the 'ol hard drive.
-
- If I had a DUO with 24 meg, then I suppose I could spare the RAM to
- use for a disc, but alas I'm stuck with another decrepit and obsolete
- machine ;-). I did find that setting the Disc Cache fairly large
- (I've got mine set at 1.5 meg) does halt the spinning up of the drive
- a lot if you're only running one or two apps. Even one accidental
- disc spin up is not acceptable if you want to take your machine into a
- meeting with you. In that situation, I still take my Atari Portfolio
- with me, since it is totally silent, I can type quick notes into it,
- then upload them into my Mac when I get back to my desk.
